Phases - Shed

So, when you totally demolish your house. . . you need somewhere to store things!

I looked into buying sheds, I looked into trailers, I looked into cargo containers. All had possibilities, but all had major downsides. Ultimately the only spot on site for such a storage facility was in the rear corner of the back yard. Unfortunately the driveway is too narrow to bring in any sizeable container or trailer and the cost of having a new shed built for us seemed excessive for something that was to last only a year.

Finally the decision was made that I would build the shed myself using wood salvaged from the demolition and a framing kit from BackyardCity.com. This would allow us to have an 8x12-foot shed with an 8-foot plate and plenty of storage room.

Items that were salvaged
All framing lumber (665 board feet of awesome quality 1930s 2x4s)
Paint (left over from other projects)
Gravel fill
Some plywood
Some lattice for the eaves

Things that needed to be purchased:
Framing Kits (2) $115.29
Felt paper (2 rolls) $36.76
Plywood for Sheathing and roof $351.42
Roofing materials, nails, lap cement and roll $93.88
Door Hinges & Latch $20.58
Primer & painting supplies $50.82
Extra Labor $180
Total $848.75

After we are done with construction this shed will have to come down to give back some yard space. Will it sell on CraigsList?

Lots of wood from the demo process

After 2 days of salvaging wood and removing 1000s of nails. . .

I began cutting the wood to exact lengths.

Soon I had a pile of parts and pieces.

The first step was to make a foundation, backfilled with gravel from the back yard for stability.

Then the floor, plates and framing brackets were put on.

Framing began with Jason's help

Tar paper to protect the interior.

After exterior sheathing and roofing.

Primer. . .

. . . and Paint!

Inside, full of stuff.
